My Sciatica Story

I was only 33 years old, slightly overweight (ok, a little more than that) and I suffered big time with sciattica. I mean big time! My right butt muscle area hurt so bad that I could harldy stand it. I actually had to drive my truck using my left foot because pushing on the brake and gas with my right shot pain down my leg and up into my hip and lower back!

I had to sit on a stack of pillows at work (yeah, I have a desk job) because putting any pressure on my butt caused me major shooting pain. It got to the point where I wanted to put my fist through the wall. This is my story of living with, and ultimately getting rid of sciatica!

Wikipedia says this about sciatica:
Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, which is sometimes severe, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.

For me, it was on the right side and my pain was caused by a combination of stress, fatigue and irritation from being overweight.

How I Got Sciatica

It started as I got caught up in the dream of making big money flipping houses. I drained my savings and bought a gigantic 5 bedroom, 4 bath house out of foreclosure with big dreams of creating a profitable flip. What I found out, however, is that things ain’t as easy as they appear to be on HGTV, especially when you are trying to completely gut and refinish a 4,500 square foot house on your own dime in your spare time!

Needless to say, I was stressed, especially because the housing market was crashing and burning at the same time, meaning a buyer would be harder to find.

That’t right, I was refinishing this monster house in my spare time which meant working late evenings 6 nights per week for 5 months. Many evenings, I didn’t get home until 3 AM. This meant that I was eating fast food frequently. In addition, I wasn’t getting enough fluids.

I was already about 25 pounds overweight when the project began, and gained an additional 10 during this period due to bad eating. On top of that, once the house was done (5 months of remodeling), it sat 3 months until we were able to accept an offer, and then it took an additional 4 months after that to actually get to the closing table. That’s 12 months of major worry which drove me to the ice cream carton nearly every night for comfort!
I was getting fat!

So there is the perfect storm for sciatic nerve irritation and pain. I am sure that hauling drywall sheets up and down stairs may have contributed to a few back spasms along the way, which added to the sciatic pain.

The Beginning of Sciatica for Me

I remember when I first noticed the sciatic pain. It was on a Saturday morning. I awoke with an annoying, pinpoint ache that felt like it was below the muscle in the right side of my butt. I actually thought at first that I had a zit there!
As the day went on and I got to working (I was working under the house that day, lots of bending and stretching up and down) the pain was not there.
But when I got home that night, it rushed back into the same spot, but with more intensity. I thought maybe I had pulled my butt muscle, so I took a couple Ibuprofen and went to bed.
The next day I was fine, but on Monday, I awoke with the pain again. I took a couple more Ibuprofen and was fine all day.

Then, Wednesday came and the pain was back. On this day, I had to drive 2 hours to a meeting for work. Long story short, I barely made it there as the driving on the bumpy Chicago roads made my pain flare up and burn badly! In addition, I had to stand in the back of the room during the 6-hour meeting because I just could not sit on my right side without pain bringing tears to my eyes. By now, Ibuprofen was not helping anymore.

How I Cured My Sciatica

Here is the short end to the story:
I went to the doctor and he diagnosed me with sciatica brought on by strain, stress and being a lard-ass! He gave me a heavy dose of oral steroids (anti-inflamatory) that did take the pain away temporarily. (as soon as the prescription was used up, the pain came back the next day)
He also gave me some poorly copied cartoon-drawings of stretching exercises that did actually work, albeit, once again, temporarily.
So I had to take matters into my own hands. I did some research, and found the Sciatica Elimination Program. Now when you go to the site, it looks freakin’ cheesy. But don’t let that deter you, the information and videos are top notch, and best of all, they work. They worked for me!
In addition to getting this sciatica relief system, I started a heavy exercise and workout routine and lost 30 pounds. I have found that the exercise also relieves my stress levels. (I did finally sell the house for a nice profit, but I WILL NEVER AGAIN FLIP ANOTHER HOUSE!)
Today, 2 years later, I am still working out, and still using the techniques taught in the sciatica and back pain relief system. I have only had one flare up in the sciatica sense then that lasted a day. I was able to use the techniques Mike teaches and stave off the onslaught immediately!
